Asheninka leader killed for protecting his rainforest territory from illegal loggers.
In August 2014, four Indigenous Asheninka environmental defenders were murdered in the forests near their community of Saweto, in the Peruvian Amazon.
As the ongoing legal fight for justice continues, there are serious security risks for their widows and the core team supporting them through this process.
After almost a decade, we are nearing the end of this long and difficult road. However keeping witnesses and the widows safe, as well as covering the legal defense of the case, is costly.
If you are an NGO, legislator, or journalist you can keep the spotlight shining by amplifying the Justice for Saweto case. The principal objective is to make certain that the case or the appeals process are not brushed under the rug by powerful actors with a vested interest in perpetuating a “business as usual” atmosphere around the illicit extraction of resources from the Amazon.
